Most of these elements are extracted in African and South American countries, where environmental protections are often poor. We call for rigorous investigation into these metals\u2019 environmental concentrations, biogeochemical cycles and possible risks to human and animal health.<\/p>\n<p>Technology-critical elements include tantalum, gallium, germanium, indium, niobium, tellurium, thallium and other scarce metals. Despite their economic importance (see, for example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.1717152115\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.1717152115\" data-track-category=\"body text link\">A. L. Gulley\u00a0<i>et al. Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA<\/i>\u00a0<b>115<\/b>, 4111\u20134115; 2018<\/a>), little is known about their environmental effects (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.earscirev.2017.07.002\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.earscirev.2017.07.002\" data-track-category=\"body text link\">M. Filella\u00a0<i>Earth Sci. Rev.<\/i>\u00a0<b>173<\/b>, 122\u2013140; 2017<\/a>). For example, tantalum increases in aquatic organisms at each successive level of the food chain (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1021\/acs.estlett.8b00051\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1021\/acs.estlett.8b00051\" data-track-category=\"body text link\">W. Espejo\u00a0<i>et al. Environ. Sci. Technol.
