This, coupled with the fact that condors inhabit both natural and anthropized territories, makes them an umbrella and flagship species that is key to the conservation objectives of the entire Andean ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With this in mind, in 2019, MERI Foundation identified the Andean condor as a key Conservation Target within Chile\u2019s terrestrial ecosystems. Since then, MERI, the Union of Ornithologists of Chile, and the Manku Project, have been working on an effective conservation model based on three lines of action: scientific research, environmental education, and advocacy in partnership with local communities. These efforts aim to minimize knowledge gaps and threats to this species and its ecosystem, and to strengthen the active role of the community, and society as a whole, in its conservation.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text][\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2019, MERI Foundation created the first Condor Pre-Release Center in Chile, located in the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/reservaelemental.cl\/san-jose-de-maipo\/\">Likandes Elemental Reserve<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">in the Metropolitan Region. This was a milestone in its commitment to the protection and study of this conservation target . The condors that are released are fitted with harmless satellite transmitters that allow scientists to monitor and evaluate how they are and to understand how condors use the territory in order to study them, protect them, and address their current and future threats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In order for children and adults to learn more about this ecosystem guardian and its threats, an environmental education program was created together with an \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reservaelemental.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/LIK_guia%20condor_vfinal%20DIGITAL.pdf\">Educational Guide to the Condor and Other Native Birds<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.\u201d The program has already reached schools in central and southern Chile and in Chilean Patagonia, along with other specific activities involving other civil society stakeholders. El c\u00f3ndor es especialmente vulnerable por los extensos territorios que habitan. Pueden ir y volver de un pa\u00eds a otro en el mismo d\u00eda. Scientific Research:<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4>Satellite Transmitters<\/h4>\n<p>Satellite transmitters are a non-invasive tool used to identify condor movement patterns and thereby define key areas of condor habitat use, such as feeding areas, roosting areas, nests, flight corridors, wintering and summering areas, etc., in order to assess their situation and main threats.<\/p>\n<h4>Condor Ecovirology<\/h4>\n<p>With the support of MERI Foundation, Dr. Gonzalo Barriga from the Faculty of Medicine of Universidad de Chile conducted an ecovirological study focused on condors. The project aimed to help identify the different families of viruses that affect this species and other native avifauna, and to determine how the environment and the behavior of the condor as it moves between Chile and Argentina, acting as a connecting host, could influence this process. This collaboration resulted in a thesis entitled \u201cEcovirology of the Andean Condor: Analysis of Viral Diversity and its Impact on Native Avifauna.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Thesis Abstract<\/h4>\n<p><img class=\"alignleft wp-image-69940\" src=\"https:\/\/fundacionmeri.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/meri_Mesa-de-trabajo-1-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"163\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fundacionmeri.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/meri_Mesa-de-trabajo-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/fundacionmeri.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/meri_Mesa-de-trabajo-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/fundacionmeri.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/meri_Mesa-de-trabajo-1-256x256.png 256w, https:\/\/fundacionmeri.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/meri_Mesa-de-trabajo-1.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 163px) 100vw, 163px\" \/>Seventeen condors of different ages (juveniles, adults, and seniors) from the Magellan and Antarctic Region that were cared for at the Center for the Rehabilitation of Birds of Prey (CRAR) were studied during 2021. Samples were taken to look for avian influenza virus (AIV) Type A and Newcastle disease virus (NDV), viruses that affect wild birds and poultry. All the sampled birds were negative for AIV (aka bird flu) and NDV. This means that the Andean condors that were rehabilitated and released by the CRAR were free of these 2 viruses at the time of sampling. In addition, antibodies against bird flu were found in the two oldest females in the study (approx. 50 years old). These animals were not suitable for release. This is the first time that influenza virus antibodies have been reported in Andean condors.<\/p>\n<p>This study opens the door for further research on condor health, including identifying the diet of wild condors, and being able to determine whether birds are immuno-depressed or ill prior to release. An outreach campaign was conducted through radio stations, communities, Conaf, and municipal governments.<\/p>\n<h4>Pre-liberation Center in the Likandes Elemental Reserve<\/h4>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The <a href=\"https:\/\/reservaelemental.cl\/san-jose-de-maipo\/\">Likandes Elemental Reserve<\/a> is located in the Metropolitan Region, in the Maipo River basin, where a high population of condors and humans coexist. The reserve is used as a base from which to address a series of questions and problems related to condor conservation in central Chile, and to develop cultural and awareness-raising activities about the condor for a primarily urban population.<br \/>\nFour condor releases have been carried out, three in the Caj\u00f3n del Maipo and one in Patagonia, with 11 condors released, nine of which were successfully released. Se les tomaron muestras para buscar el Virus influenza aviar tipo A (IAV) y Virus de la enfermedad de Newcastle (NDV), virus que afectan a aves silvestres y de corral. Todas las aves muestreadas dieron negativo a AIV y NDV. Esto significa que los c\u00f3ndores Andinos que son rehabilitados y liberados por el CRAR, est\u00e1n libres de esos 2 virus en el momento particular de muestreo. Adem\u00e1s, se encontraron anticuerpos contra virus influenza aviar tipo A en las dos hembras m\u00e1s longevas del estudio (aprox. 50 a\u00f1os), animales que no estaban en condiciones de ser liberados. Es la primera vez que se describe presencia de anticuerpos contra virus influenza en c\u00f3ndor andino.<\/p>\n<p>Este estudio abre puerta para una amplia investigaci\u00f3n sobre el estado sanitario del C\u00f3ndor, incluso identificar la dieta de c\u00f3ndor silvestre, pudiendo en el futuro identificar si las aves est\u00e1n inmuno deprimidas o enfermas antes de una liberaci\u00f3n. In Chile, UNORCH has worked for 25 years in condor management, captive breeding, rehabilitation, and release.<\/p>\n<p>MERI Foundation joined in 2019 to promote the reintroduction of rehabilitated condors through the creation of the first condor pre-release center.
